Hold Short Before You Add Observation Windows to Your 140 My Friend!

Legally, the 140A was the only aircraft of the series that observation doors could be fitting to. They are listed as optional equipment in the parts book as "Patroller Doors".

Now, we've had previous posts about this subject, and yes, there is gent who has done this. I believe that Dave Sbur is the one with the drawing showing the type door; however, if an individual wants this type door on a 120/140 it would more than likely require a 337 field approval. Not difficult especially for this type of application since the airframe of the 140A and 150 are very similar.

Cessna made patroller type doors are rare as hens teeth. I've never seen any advertised in Trade-A-Plane or in any other publication for that matter. Dave Lowe told me in the past that it's not difficult to make a patroller door out of a standard door, but there is some work involved and some parts to be gathered. If you have a 140A or 150 parts book you can see what they look like.

I looked back through my Creve Coure pictures and it was N2187N that is a 140 with patroller doors.

Looked up N2187N at the FAA registry and it looks like it is registered to Greg Powell and now that I see that name it rings a bell that the Powell brothers were both at the convention.

I am looking at the Cessna Engineering Drawing for the Patroller door. It is titled "Door Assy - Pipe Line Patrol Ship". The drawing number is 0411914 and it show applicability to the 140A and 150 ( with S/N breaks and added middle hinge).

It appears to have everything you would need dimentionally to modify a standard door. This includes dimentions for some of the angles and clips that you will need to make to hold the window in place.

Greg Powell sent me a bunch of photos that he took during the modification of his doors. If you email him I am sure he would likely share them with you or maybe even post some of them here.

Hey Everyone,

I haven't been on the 140 website for awhile, but if anyone has questions about the patrol door conversion, I'll be glad to assist.

Over the years, I have thoroughly enjoyed the patrol doors. They really open up the cabin.

Here is my 140A. I like the bright cabin and great view with these doors. I plan to be in Spearfish this fall so come and poke and prod all you like.

Jake,
This is what I have for now. The inside is really a picture of the dash but you can see a corner of the door. Hope this keeps you going until I can get some like you want.

As a matter of historical interest, the dates on the engineering drawings are 1943 and 1945, so it can't be said that they apply only to the 140A and 150 aircraft. The difference is the location of the door handle, which results in a little less glass area below the beltline.

Mike, my drawing is courtesy of Greg Powell, and shows both door latch locations, although it may just call for the relocation of the door handle aft to permit more glass like later models. It is titled "Pipeline Patrol Ship".
See you at SPF.
