A club I belonged to had the extenders on a Cessna 140 for 20 years with hundreds of hours flown with no complaints and no accidents. Nobody seemed to think there was a problem.

I think you will find, going directly from extenders to swept forward legs, that they are NOT the same. The extenders introduce a significant “squirrelly” behavior, compared to the swept legs. I don’t know if I would notice until flying back to back. Just go in eyes wide open. In 300+ hours flying my 140 there has been exactly one instance of needing the brakes badly enough that a nose over was even a possibility. That was a short grass strip with trees on each end.

That's the good thing about grass!

I used to own a short strip with trees at both ends. With the elevator full back you don't have enough traction on grass to nose over.
