My 140 Serial number is 15020 and I need the correct door latch spring for it. Part number is 0411554. Page 58 of the 140 Parts Manual. I'll take two of them if you have the correct springs.
Thanks, Richard

In the "Members Only" section "Library" there is a Diagram showing how to make your own Door Latch Spring.
Steve.

Richard, send me an email or PM. I can put you in touch with one of our members in Georgia that makes them. Hopefully he has some left.

...to bring this "spring request" up to date a bit, Richard had tried a couple of springs fabricated by a very generous member who had supplied all of us with a pair at a convention several years back. Richard found that the "U-shaped" portion is approx. 1/8" too long...would require modification (bending) to use (Attached pic shows newer spring contrasted with old/broken spring on right). This same member has now "re-tooled" and is sending a couple more that are "shorter" and should hopefully(!) be a perfect fit -- Richard will try them in a few days. And, while I certainly don't intend to speak for Mr. Chavez, there is a post on the 170 Assoc. site indicating that he no longer makes and sells the springs. Finally, FWIW, the member who is now assisting Richard with these springs does not make springs to sell although his expertise, engineering skills and enthusiasm for helping others often leads him to "lend a hand" to fellow 140'ers in need. A Great guy who fits the 120-140 "family profile" extremely well I'll quickly add! Mac

For all our information...I just called Lee Chavez, and he does make the springs as they are ordered. I contacted him via his number from his ad on this site.

His price is $25.00 per spring, plus $10.00 shipping. I assume the shipping is regardless of 1 or 2 springs.

He was a real nice fellow to talk to!

Hope this helps.

Steve

I had mine fail on the pilot's side. Seriously this is a really easy job. The drawing has the dimensions but you don't need a piece of steel to make the jig or to be 100% accurate to nearest 0.5mm. I cut a block of wood to the thickness and then drilled a hole in the right place. Drill bit through the hole to make the bit to wind around. This sort of piano wire is available from most DIY shops and it is really very cheap. I bought enough to mess up several times but actually it is so simple that you don't need to worry. The key thing is to leave long tails and then trim to fit once you are fitting it.

The trick to getting the plate off is to get the door handle off first then tie some wire or string to the lever rod that goes through the door so even if it falls into the door you can retrieve it. The undo the screws of the latch plate on the door and pull the handle and operating rods out. As you have string / locking wire on the other end it doesn't matter if the operating rod thingy falls into the door space.

I actually then released the mech from the operating rod at the latch end to clean and service but if not its a ten minutes of fiddling to get the new spring fitted. It just doesn't go and then it does. Its about keep trying. Then pull on the string/ wire and guide the latch plate back into position.

Key trick is to make sure the little arm thing that connects the operating rod to the handle at the handle end points in the correct direction depending on if you want to pull up to open or pull down to open with the door handle.

On the pilots door on my 140A I have to manually move the handle to the closed position each time to latch the door. I have not taken it apart to see but I assumed it was the spring on the handle itself, part# 413317 that I need. Does that sound right or is it the spring this thread is about that is broken?

Thanks

Yep its a broken door latch spring - it does the job of holding the door latch block thingy into the closed position unless positive action is taken with the door handle to pull it back to open the door.
