generator polarizing

hello,
recently my delco-remy generator had new brushes installed but there are still charging issues so I would like to start with the basics by polarizing the generator.
youtube videos give contradicting information on how to do this at the voltage regulator.
one tells me to briefly connect the battery terminal with the field terminal while another want to use armature terminal.
the other way is to to use the batt. term. and flash the generator directly.
any insights would be appreciated.

Master switch must be on. Everything else should be off. Momentarily connect a jumper from the "BAT" terminal to the "GEN" terminal. Two or three seconds is long enough.

thank you, John.
probably would have forgotten the master switch.
