HEADLINE Newton KS: Minimalist and tight wad aircraft owner John Kliewer's Narco 150 transponder passes yet another 24 month ckeck, and for bonus points also receives yet another successful uAvionix Skybeacon ADS-B performance report the same day.

Seriously, I go into these 24 month transponder checks with fear and trembling wondering what I'd do if my old Narco fails the test. I think part of my Narco's success is that the technician knows how to test this very old piece of equipment. One thing he has learned is that it cannot be tested wirelessly. I will continue to go back to the same guy every time. One other key to success is to let the old Narco warm up a minimum of 5 minutes prior to testing.

If anyone has good suggestions about what to do if my old Narco quits someday, I'll be happy for your advice.

John: I've got just the guy for you - search on "transponder repairs" and select the one in Florida (Milton) and go to his page. Lots of detail there. I've used him many times.
At my age and hand situations, I'm a very slow on key board, if you'd like more details, send me your phone #.

Congratulations! I was lucky and found a cheep one on Craig’s List. Had my shop bench check it and it’s good to go. A Garmin GNX 373 gps/transponder/adsb in/out may be nice but the ~15k all up is more than the plane can carry.

Thank you Edd for telling me about Milton in Florida. I'll definitely put him into my contacts.

And Matt thank you too for relating your own success story. I'm glad it has worked out for you.

Great! Mine will be checked later this week. I have the same fear and trembling. Tightwads of America unite!
