Scott 2000 hub cap

Post by 8258 »

Afternoon friends,

I'm looking for small advice on the 'exact' type of screws for the Scott 2000 hub-cap. I know the p/n, but having followed this and obtained said part from the UK agent for Aircraft Spruce, the incorrect screw was sent (way too small diameter and incorrect thread), so I'm head scratching to find a suitable 'replacement'.

any ideas on thread type and size, screw length ?

thanks all.....

More likely the threads on your wheel are stripped out and the correct screws no longer fit. You can try the next larger screw size, or some sort of thread repair. It's not structural, so you have some latitude in how you deal with it.

thank you John,

this was my theory too, as I have done this so far with existing hub, but have a spare, which I was using to offer-up any/all the small screws I have, to try and find a fit, before I do as you say to yet another wheel hub !

cheers

I just pulled one of the screws off my hubcap and I'm using 6-32 x 1/2 Truss Head, stainless steel. AN526C-632R16.

The previous owner of my airplane used sheet metal screws to attach the hub cap to the 2000 wheel. I realized that was incorrect the first time I pulled the wheel to grease the bearings. Good news is that the threads in the wheel were still okay and I was able to use the noted machine screws from then on.

If the threads are stripped on yours, it is easy enough to pull off the wheel, disassemble it then redrill and tap new holes. Or, maybe you can just try to retap them to see if you get enough bite for the proper size machine screw to work? Or drill and retap upsized for helicoils. If US screws are tough to get in the UK, just drill and tap for metric. M4 (slightly bigger than US Number 6) should work just fine.
