C-140 Flap bellcrank wear at spring connnection

Post by 6597 »

As the title says, those long springs that keep your flaps neutral up behind the headliner have caused some grooves in the bellcrank. I read a possible repair using AN115-8 cable shackles, but at $15 a pop times 4 I thought I'd see if anyone had another acceptable repair. Something I need to address for next annual.

Dave, I think it may have been John Cooper who suggested that maybe welding up the area and re-drilling holes might be an acceptable repair(?) and alternative to David Owen's neat fix and excellent write-up. If I'm seeing it correctly, though, and if the springs are also worn, the addition of the cable shackles may provide a bit of tolerence for shortening/re-arching the springs, 'though minor spring length adjustment may not be critical(?). Aircraft parts and pieces seem to always even out pace runaway inflation, don't they!?

How about tailwheel spring clips, $3.95 each?

On my way to the hangar now to investigate, very clever!

Mac, yes, I will check the spring ends, if I find some wear then yes we'll 'adjust' them. I suspect if I use the spring clips I'd have to shorten the springs anyway. Thanks all!
