Landing light C140

Post by 46cessna140 »

My landing light motor drive is inoperable. The intermediate brass gear is broken & the pot metal armature end bracket is broken. I would appreciate feedback whether the motor drive can be repaired or replaced or is it more common to install leading edge lights instead? The wings are off of the plane to be recovered.
Thank you

If you want the funky classical look, I'd contact these guys: http://www.avliteaviation.com/vintage.html

OTOH, If you want to go with the leading edge light, now's the time to do it.

Personally, I would go with the leading edge light, particularly since the wings are not covered. It's instant on, no drag, no mechanism to wear out, LED bulb will draw less power. You might get a few bucks for your old light on ebay?

There's usually a boat load of Grimes lights and some parts on Ebay -- it's good to have part #s and/or photos handy to sift through them -- there were lots of models. That said, most seem priced so far out of reason that they never seem to sell, just relist 'til someone really needs/wants! . An example & one that's actually priced well @ $15.00 (...and, I realize that this isn't one of your broken parts):

The leading edge sure seems to be most practical all'round...but, I sure do like the "old timey" retractable on my 140 (...with a "modern" LED bulb). Hope it keeps on working!

Thank you all for your feedback. Leading edge lights looks like the direction to go for me.

Woodstock Aircraft in White Lake NY advised they only provide the paperwork for $195. Any feedback on where to purchase a leading edge landing light kit or how else to pursue installation would be appreciated. Thank you
