Fuel comes in the shorter pipe, on the inside of the screen. The water separates out as the fuel goes through the screen and fills the bowl. The water stays in the bottom and the clean fuel enters the standpipe on top.

This photo shows the longer standpipe, the outlet, sticking up above the top of the screen.

We took our gascolator apart at the current annual to replace the gasket and it only has the longer of the two pipes shown in your photo. The fuel simply flows in an open hole in the bottom next to the drain hole. Is this okay? I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be okay but then again that shorter pipe must have been put in there for some reason.

Thanks!

The important thing is that the fuel is drawn from the top of the gascolator since any water in the fuel would collect at the bottom.

I can personally attest to how important this is and how well it works...
