Original Color Schemes

Post by 6643 »

This is a compendium of information on original colors from the old forum. As any new information becomes available I will endeavor to add it here.

To start, the color chart from the Parts Catalog:
"The colors did not have standard number codes as they do today." - John von Linsowe

i am currently refurbishing a 1947 c-140. right now, i am working on the instrument panel and having trouble finding out where to find the original color of the instrument panel. i notice from pictures that some are white and some are the same color as the striping on the exterior. of i can, where can i find the exact name and color of the paint to make my project as original as i can.
also, i am looking for the plastic piece that covers the throttle quadrant and the switch panel which labels all the switches. it is clear plastic with a white background and black lettering. univair did not seem to hold it.
if anyone has any info on where i may be able to locate these things it would be very helpful to my project.
thanks, mike

Mike,
As to the paint color, you may be able to find some original paint on the front side of the doorposts next to the windshield under the trim pieces. or at the bottom of the door posts near the floor. Some out of the way place where someone didn't paint over it. Even then if you rub through the present paint with lacquer thinner you may come up with some original paint for a match.

As to the plastic overlay you are in luck. Joy Warren makes absolutely beautiful new ones exactly like originals. Figure out what nomenclature you want for your keyboard switches ahead of time.

I found that the paint code GM 2556 a real good match for the 1947 140
that I had . I think it is a 1982 Chevy color.

In 1947 the interior was either Cessna Grey (140) or Cessna Reddish Brown (120). As far as my research concluded there are no identification code for these colors. I think Loraine Morris may have some information however. She has done interior work. I have seen a small sample of the original Cessna Grey and it looked like a brownish grey to me.
